Art Outing

Yesterday some of the bead producers of Mzuribeads came out to see my exhibition. They were super inspired, seeing their beads in such a professional and funky atmosphere. Afterward, we ambled across to Isha's restaurant for dinner and we discussed future possibilities....then.. giggled a lot and danced.

It was true when I told them that they were my most important guests at the show, and I couldn't have been happier with their response to my work. Working on the exhibition took up a lot of my time, which otherwise would have been directed on Mzuribeads sales. Everyone is aware that this months sales figures have been somewhat low in comparison to previous months. In short, it was great that the team have regarded this show as something worth time and effort despite the financial setback.

Uganda - The Arts

WORKING WEEKEND

This weekend was full of fun. On Friday I picked up our new trade posters. The posters are for our wholesale customers who own a physical bead store... So here they are on our workshop wall.

Tomorrow we collect our stickers for our bead bags (:

Saturday we went with my friend Nahida Bhegani's, owner of Kanaya(ad agency), and the funky Tshirt producing Definition, (who we aim to collaborate in a new production space/workshop and office with), to look at spaces on the rental market.

Nahidas' parents are the owners of the delightful Masindi hotel....And on Sunday I went round to the family house to find them packing a beautiful heard of soap stone animals for the hotel store.

At lunch time we all headed off, (with possibly the most fearless and speed demon driver in Kampala..Mrs Bhegani), to a new gallery opening called Mish Mash... a family atmosphere containing a mix of dancing, art, fashion and more. The selected rainbow colour banners around the compound suggested a hint of gay pride, which we excitingly pondered over. Stella (a fashion design we often collaborate with) and Sanaa Gatega (our barkcloth bead supplier/artist) both put on a great show. However, the layout and schedule did not allow the event to reach its full potential. But as a first event, the turnout was impressive.

One tasty eye ball soup,

one fabulous Ndejje day..

My experience in Uganda so far has always contained these small bursts of illness. I'm not referring to the three horrendous episodes those tiny winged bloodsucking badboys tried to kill me off (almost successfully) with their malaria madness. But these random unexplained drowsy periods, occasional vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, and so on. All so mysteriously short lived...For example, I can go out for a run, eat something, feel fabulous, then all of a sudden feel drugged, loose control of my legs to the point I have to lie down, sweat and stress about getting myself to the nearest clinic .. Then find myself five minuets later on my way to town...as energetic as before ....wondering, what the heck was that all about? Here, so many illnesses are left unexplained... empty, and I think that's where many take the opportunity to colour it in with a little easy, old witch doctor/voodoo tale. But, seriously, I reckon its a combination of my body not being strong enough for village living and the fact that so much grows, and spreads here so rapidly....

Anyway, when a rapid vomit hit me the other day, following a small boda boda accident and a chorus of baby wailing, I decided to take a day break.

So I decided to go off to check out the new Serena hotel on this side of town, overlooking lake Victoria. It was like Barbies palace, an Oasis at the end of long dusty road. Totally lacking in atmosphere, as are most of these surreal settings ; A bizarre building of enormous grandeur in the middle of a typical quite, Ugandan suburban off road area. Anyway, it was just what I needed, to be left alone, silent on a terrace with a cool beer. Over looking lake V...

And the retreat worked. I returned to Ndejje, in which I proudly call home, fully recharged and eager for plenty more dust and diarrhoea...

This morning, fully productive. I trained new mother Joelia on direct email marketing. She was soo eager to learn, and cant wait to continue this work, which has pleased me greatly. I know she would rather be on the computer than beading. Baby Nina lay quietly beside her throughout...

I did a whole bunch of interviews for the documentary trailer, and refueled on some good solid Ugandan grub.. matoke (sour banana) and gnut sauce. ...which I like very much, but had those tiny little fishes in it.. you know the ones that have massive eyes, and microscopic bodies, so the thing looked like eye ball soup.

But I got passed that, closed my eyes and enjoyed them for their no doubt salty, protein filled goodness.

Later we finished the afternoon by completing a large wholesale order. The day couldn't have ended better, as everyone went home with wages = a big smile.

Today we went along to our catch up with Vicent and team, who produce our cow horn beads.

The workshop is currently located in Nakowa market, Kampala. But, Vicent wishes to expand into a larger, better equipt and cleaner workspace in the near future....we aim to assist him in his ambitions.

The team happily showed me their workplace, materials and then took me through the process of making the beautiful beads.

We are happy to see the beads travel and be used globally.

We have also found banana leaf fibre to not only make fab beads, but great packaging. Light in weight, attractive, very similar padding, and far more ethical than bubble wrap.

Hoe No!

Garden plans,

painful hands

& several yams..

This mornings plans were peaceful computer sales all the way through till lunch. So to my new officespace I went from 6am....until the sound of digging disturbed my ears. Edith and her daughters were standing about in a nearby garden with their hoes and yams, ready to plant. I immediately put on my running gear, (this is the only outfit I have apart from a small selection of loose dresses and jeans, which I really need to do something about...) and off I went.....Eagerly grabbed a hoe and began to assist.

Now, when Edith mentioned a while back that she goes 'digging' on a Saturday, I used to giggle to myself ....The fact that it is a world apart from the glamorous beads... The laugh is now on me! ...I have three large boiling hand blisters, a burnt nose, intense back pain, and still experiencing nausea. Non of which I shared amongst the group.. I saved my painful groans for my room /:

Despite, the sheer agony of this exercise, I was glad to help, I will in future need gloves, and a week off work to recover. And although I appreciate this was a healthy workout...for regular exercise, I believe I will stick to my short morning runs..
...clearly my shoes can't cope(: haha

Notes from Collection day and my New office.

Mzuribeads having been tackling the wholesale orders, whilst I have made myself a good office space and workspace. I have recently taken big changes in how the women now complete and order. In short they are becoming even closer to the customer, increasing quality, and understanding greater the idea of shared responsibility, project management, and Google docs!

Although, we are coming far, I am still to divide my time on working amongst the group, sourcing new and improved materials, and doing numerous tests and samples, sales, training, internal system management, customer relations, and the list goes on, and on, and on, and on...

I am still managing to get some photography done for a fashion designer, and keep producing my own collection, My Little Mudhut. Plus making some super new, big and bold pieces for a couple of fashion shows coming up. Watch this space for lots of creations which will go on display.

My new office space (:

The election day is tomorrow, here in Kampala, and I know a good few in hope of change. Personally, the idea of peace being most appealing, having dived head first into work on arriving 3 weeks back. Nevertheless, inspired by the recent Arabic revolutions across the globe, it would please me greatly to see Ugandans challenging Museveni, and opening the eyes of all the Ugandans whose vote has been pushed by the false; "I brought you peace" claim. Here's hope for the future of democracy.

Settled, well...almost.

Blood, goats and roaches

Having located a room for my stay here in Ndejje, Uganda. I proceeded today in getting kitted up for the move in. Things were a bit delayed, as my friends car had to be repaired on the way to giving me a lift. This was due to an incident last night which marked a slight horrific start to my stay. Last night, having just seated ourselves outside Miki's bar in Monyonyo with a vodka tonic, two boda's collided. One got away with pretty sever concussion, whilst the other spun, hit his head on my mate's car and lay in front of us gasping for life. His head injuries were extremely severe and we doubt he survived the night.

I was rather shaken u by the sudden change; relaxed evening drinking scene to grotesque blood bath, but the incident wasn't the most disturbing part of this evening. It was the reaction to the body... the first person who ran to help, flipped the guy right over, on his front, which I think was a response to stop him choking, but I was pretty sure this was not the appropriate recovery position. Somebody phoned the police - they weren't picking, and no one was prepared to drive him to the hospital, as they knew they would be held responsible. Everyone just stood staring at the body and each other realising that there was nothing they were prepared to do to help. This really was one of the most desperate scenarios I have encountered. Ten minuetes at least went by before someone claiming to be his brother had succefully begged an escort, whilst the pup owner paid a small contributed to the fuel cost and fare. Aparently there was a policeman there watching the whole thing, and did not respond. They talked of the most likely responce from the dialed 999, (in the chance that they had picked up the call) would have been something like... 'Well....have you got fuel to get him to the hospital?... because for us... we have none'

Anyhow, the blip where the head met the car got fixed, and on the way I picked up the following essentials for my Ugandan hideout:

A wash basin, jerry can, kettle, padlock, torch, mosquitto net, cup, candles, and matches,

And with that I am happy and settled. The girls, Ediths daughters, moved a bed and mattress in from there place and made the bed in military fashion, so precise, hospital corners, etc. They then cleaned my floor, hung the net, put down some mats, and moved my bags, clothes and things around until they felt they were all in the most suitable positions (:

In the evening we played a handmade ludo game, and brushed up my basic L'uganda vocab and phrases. I was tired and ready for bed at around 8, so I went off to my room. I was quite unaware I was going to be visited and re-welcomed by almost everyone in the family group until about 10.30. Even my new landlord had time to pay a visit, sitting on my hand weaved (by Edith) mat for a good 20 minutes, greeting me and adding to the gossip and general chatter passed between the then 6 people gathered in my room. Having spent most of my teenage and adulthood living and sleeping solo...I found it rather ironic that one of the main subjects people were concerned with last night was whether I would fear being alone. Not only did I have 6 people in my room at the time, and Uganda's love for load music and beat follow you through the day and night...But there is an endless wailing of a babe crying from every direction. In short, I did not feel in the least 'alone'. Rough statistics? In this inlet of Ndejje, there are around 3 family networks. consisting of maybe 15 adults in total, and 11 new borns. The rest are children at properly 25 or more.

Later that night, a lizard poked my head and tugged at my hair, I failed to use the latrine due to a fear of flying cockroaches, and (.....in the pitch darkness, thinking it was a frightened child)....tried to befriend a goat.

ALL GOOD IN THE BEADIN HOOD

Today I came to Ndejje by Matatoo and grabbed cassolli, (boiled maze) for breakfast on the way. The transport cost me 2,000 Ugandan Shillings, but this only takes you to Zana district, and I had to walk a good ten mins to reach Ndejje, and finally to the home of Edith Namanda, (our Mzuribeads Ugandan head of opperations). She welcomed me with a big smile, and showed me around all the improvements to her area and compound since i was last here. A new water pump, lots of new neighbouring homes, better roofing and planning of her family amenities. However, the improvements were not the only reasons for Ediths big grin, she has just become a grandmother! Ediths son now has a wife and child which are now pleasantly located in the new build next Ediths. He is still involved in construction, and work is 'somewhat ok', which usually means a little bit closer to consistent contracts. So, once Edith had fully presented me her current pride and joy, she showed me a room for rent behind their home. It was a small, very modest little private nook, which I decided will suite me well. I will have to share a communal family bathing and toilet area, and I will be pleased to live close and within her family and the community .....and only pay a monthly rent of £17 a month (: I move into the room tomorrow night with a my laptop and flash light (:

Back in the beading hut, Edith and I discussed the future and plans for me work here. She was nearly in tears of joy when I discussed the plans for us to find a sponsor for her trip to the Uk and the chance to apear and present her work at an International show, such as the Scottish Bead Fair.

She was also very happy about the £25 we have so far raised for Mzuriseeds, the garden project. It is the dry season right now, but I will be visiting Mabel, (the garden pro), later this week to start plans and understanding of what we should start to grow in each season, etc. Local boy, little Benedict (who's mother died last time I was here) has grown and is looking healthy. It seems he has been very lucky that Edith has taken him in and he is now very much part of the family. Another friend of Ediths has come into unfortunate financial situation and has had to leave to working in the quarries of Entebbe. Edith has kindly taken in her daughter, she is 16, and in need of the funds from her mother to pay her school fees....we are all crossing her fingers that the money will be there before the term starts in 2 weeks time. Either way, she is grateful to have been welcomed, accommodated, fed and happily pulls her weight with house chores, alike all of Ediths children.... I guess she'd be in the quarries also, if it wasn't for the goodness of Edith and her family /:

Other news, Mama Change, another beader, has given birth to another healthy babe. I will meet with the other beaders later next week. I don't wish for us to meet for a long hot, boring meeting on this occasion. Orders have been many, and tricky last year....we have all been working extremely hard. I have decided we will throw a party, a 'Well done/Happy New Year party', and I am looking forward to it.

We made some big changes in 2010. However, 2011 will to mark our biggest step yet. We begin with the relocation of the online retail shop. For the trial period, February - May 2011, it will operate from Uganda, not the UK. Shipping time will increase. However, more power and responsibility will be placed in the producers skillful hands.

This restructure is part of a larger movement which aims to offer the customer increased quality, control, and communication.

And for the producer; more control, increased responsibility, a chance to strengthen the managerial team and introduce new products.

Mzuribeads Design Workshop

On the 1st of December I was invited to the Metropolitan College in Glasgow, to deliver a talk about Mzuribeads and our products to mark the beginning of the non precious segment of the Jewellery department course work. As the Metropolitan is a very hands on practical college, the course tutors/jewelers, Euan McWhirter and Pilar Agueci had welcomed my idea to turn the talk into a workshop.

The workshop was held from 9.30 - 12pm and started out with a quick intro round and some wake up/ guess materials games. I then presented a slideshow and talk on Mzuribeads, our ethical bead company and introduced our full range of eco friendly, fair traded beads all handmade by the village producers I work with in Uganda.

Everyone then had their chance to roll their own recycled paper beads, and create some funky and abstract group sculptures with the full range of barkcloth, banana leaf, cow horn and recycled glass beads I brought along. I do feel the most inspiring part was for the group to see the beads used on my contemporary collection of jewellery, named 'My Little Mudhut', sold locally at Nancy Smillies, Glasgow.

Film Documentary Fundraiser

My name is Kirstie Maclean, I am a 26 year old female raised in Glasgow. In 2006 I founded Mzuribeads, a fair trading business working with jewellery and bead makers in the urban villages of Uganda. The business has grown from strength to strength and we now stock many stores in the UK and worldwide. In January 2011, I intend to produce a documentary with a Glaswegian producer named Martin Clark. The main purpose of this short film will be to promote awareness of our work, the importance of fair trade, and to attract further interest and funds for a larger sustainable arts platform we have planned. Who is filming? KIRSTIE MACLEAN
Myself...I am 26 year old female, raised in the West end of Glasgow. Educated at Kelvinside Academy, and prematurely left higher a degree in Community Education to invest into Mzuribeads. The business now supports itself. Nevertheless, although my expenses are covered and I earn commission from wholesale orders, I rely on casual work to support myself. My dream is to see the Mzuribeads cooperatives taking full control of their businesses. Showing that innovate ideas and hard work can grown a respect for local materials and talents. Setting the pace for self sufficient programs that result in long term development for the communities involved. After Mzuribeads I have plans to establish a larger supporting funding umbrella for similar creative and educational grassroots projects. MARTIN CLARK
My friend, Laura Frame introduced me to Martin after he gave a on his work to her class at The Glasgow school of Art. At this time Martin was completing his first film project abroad, and showed a keen interest in Mzuribeads, and a filming in rural Uganda. After getting to know Martin and viewing his work, I believe his style to be suitable to interview style documentary proposed and look forward to

Why a film documentary?

AN INSPIRING INSIGHT
Video footage will effectively illustrate the skillful making of the colorful recycled paper beads and the working/living conditions of the producers in Uganda. The interview style will show an honest and personal account of the running of a grassroots project.

AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL
I have contacts with colleges and schools around the UK and beyond that will use the film to promote the use of sustainable materials and the importance of fair trade. The video will be distributed to these contacts, and more educational bodies will be contacted. I have been invited to talk at schools and colleges, and will be doing my first workshop/talk about the business in the jewelry department of the Metropolitan college early December. On completion of the documentary I personally aim to deliver and talk alongside showings at schools and colleges.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT
In February a 2011 a ‘Beyond Bead’ design competition will go out to art schools and colleges. The design brief, will encourage artists to submit an idea for an art piece to be incorporating the beads. Proposals we be accepted from any discipline, fashion, architecture, sculpture, etc. The winners will showcase their work alongside the first screening of the film documentary at Che Camilles in August 2011. We will push for features in the local publications that have previously taken an interest in the Mzuribeads and myself, and invite larger press attention.

What do we need?
We require £5000 for the film to be produced and directed by Kirstie MacLean, Martin Clark and a sound technician. Travel - flights and hire car - £2,000 Expenses - film reels, insurance, accommodation, safety, food - £1,000 Wages for Ugandans assistants - £1,000 Basic wage to cover editing time - £ 1,000

When do we need it?
The film is scheduled to be filmed on the 12th January, 2011 - 22nd January, 2011. Editing will take 3-4 months, and ready for first screening August 2011.

Definitely Omo in turquoise! I made a necklace with an earlier version of these beads and it’s been much admired. These beads are so much lighter and more comfortable to wear than glass or ceramic.

I absolutely love fair trade beads!! I am teaching a cultural beading class at a school in NYC this fall (begins in a week), and will include a class on fair trade beading in Africa. The children range from 5-8th grade, and I am sure they would absolutely love to work with such beautiful, ethical beads.

Paper Beading in Kampala

Back in Uganda...beading in Ndejje..

I arrived on on the 6th of April, and got straight to work the next . This was one of the first collection days with a only part of the Mzuribeads group. A collection day is simply when the women hand me the beads ordered, and I give them money in exchange. Collection days are always very exhausting for everyone. Not to get bogged down with detail, but the counting is a lengthy process, and each bead is increasingly more scrutinized for its symetrical and clean finish. And after reuniting with my Kampala chums last night, (no strangers to late night bars, and all night dancing),...I knew today would be tough (:

In the Bead hut we bead...

Often collection days leave me exhausted, but today's collection left me high and happy. The process was long, but I thoroughly enjoyed being around the women again. As business has begun to grow, we can see far more clearly problem areas, and ways to make the process easier and quicker.

I left Ndejje on a boda boda, (motorbike taxi) had the sun coming down on me whilst I reflected on the day. The day had me physically reminded about my passion for community arts and development, Why I started this business, and although it’s been slow progress, how amazing and lucky I am to be doing something creative, new, and ethical. It’s been a nice day.

Mzuri Paper Beaders in Uganda

Today, I want to tell you a bit about the paper beaders in Uganda. Mildred, Edith, Gertrude and Harriet were the intial four women we started working with. Bellow is a picture of my brother Angus and I with them back in 2006. We are sitting in what we was the first Mzuribeads office. It was an open space offered by a friend. It had no roof, and rubble for walls and flooring. It was more on the lines of 'historic ruins' than a ' office space', but it was filled with our intial enthusiasm and ambitions.

We then started to train the friends and neighbours in Ndejje, the village these women lived in. Bellow are a few of the other Mzuribeads members.

Harriet gave birth to her third child whilst I was working in Uganda with the women in 2008. I was happy that Mzuribeads could financial assist her hospital fees, and that her baby was born safely, and is now seen modelling Mzuribeads (:Lydia
Although very shy, I think Lidia is one of the most beautiful young women I've met. She is Edith's second eldest daughter, and is seen here modelling a necklace.

Daily Life
Cooking and Washing are the usual daily chores, that take up most hours of the day around beading. Above is Ediths home, where we hold meetings and spend hours chatting, translating, and trying out new techniques, materials and crafts.

Meetings and Accounts
Meetings and accounts are often long winded, and challenging. But, we are particular about the system in which we work, and ensure that we spend as much time as possible voting, discussing and achieving positive results.

Chicken Farming
With Edith's savings she has started to take farm chickens. They usually are found wondering around the land around her house, and are later sold or used to farm the next generation. It is a long term investment for many of the women.

Worlds Largest Recycled Paper Bead

Rollin Rollin Rollin...

I decided to attract some attention for Mzuribeads, by rolling an over sized, rather useless, but amusing gigantic paper bead.

As far as I have been informed this is
THE Worlds Largest Recycled Paper Bead.
I would love to make that official, but I have yet to meet anyone willing to sponsor me with the £400 fee charged by the Record Book folk.
So, you'll either have to challenge me, or just have to take my word for it (;

I rolled this in Botanical Gardens, Glasgow West End.

I first put together lots of magazine covers with clear sellotape.

I measured it 1.4metres across, and made it as tall as I had enough recycled paper for.

I then measured with string, and then cut a perfect triangle.

I then called in a friend, and began the rolling of the paper bead

We rolled, and we rolled
...making sure it was even on both sides and as tight as we could get it.

And, that was it!
Bellow is a picture of me and my brother, (Angus MacLean), with the finished 1.4metre recycled magazine paper bead.

I was pleased that a recycled paper bead could be made that large, and in a few hours.
But, it was too slim and the gaps between each layer were to wide.
I knew it would be more effective with a greater length to roll in,
(more paper to roll in would add to the thickness)

So, I went a little further... I collected some bus stop ad size posters, with thanks to Printing.com, and head on out to my friends empty candle factory in Govan. ( ShearerCandles)
I did exactly the same thing as with the covers of the magazine in the first bead, and taped all the posters together, then cut out a perfect triangle.

Because of the length I made it, it took a loooong time to roll, and my arms started aching, but the result was a thicker bead.

This is me with the finished 1.2metre recycled paper bead.

I went to the theatre last night to see La Boheme with my friend Bobby, but it was a disappointing production...So, instead of written on Mudhut, I'm going to write about my work on Mzuribeads tonight.

I've been trying to come up with a new look and logo for Mzuribeads. Since I have failed ): to come up with any ideas myself. I thought I'd pick three logo/images from some of my most current inspirations.

So, here they are together with Mzuribeads put into their style bellow.

Paper bead King presents THE BARKCLOTH BEAD

To bead or not to bead is simply not a question for Gateja.

We are very pleased to introduce you to the King of the Beads. He's taught the art of the Mzuri recycled paper bead to groups all over Uganda, developed the barkcloth bead, and the banana leaf bead...Furthermore, he is a fashion designer, one of Uganda's most extablished painters, and and gets commissioned for massive pieces he creates from glass beads.

...Seriously, we love this guy, he is
THE bead king.

Sanaa returned back to his homeland of Uganda in the 90’s after he established his own galleries, worked as a professional jeweller, arts manager, arts teacher, and so much more. He now lives just outside of Kampala on a scenic stretch of Ugandan soil, where he has delved deep into painting and a collection of interior decor, fashion and beads with his community art women's workshop named “Kwetu Africa”.

What makes Sanaa amazing is his talent to work with anything he gets his hands on, as you can see from the range of beads he has developed. Barkcloth is one of his favorite materials. It is made by beating sodden strips of the fibrous inner bark of trees into sheets. Alike the paper bead, it is cut into strips and rolled into form. Bellow we have pictured some barkcloth dyed, and lying out to dry. Sanaa in one of his fabulous Barkcloth jackets, and the glorious barkcloth beads themselves.

Sanaa has has also made the paper bead dress, and a paper bead door curtain, made from a range of recycled and natural Ugandan elements such as dyed maize (corn), and beads made from bark cloth and recycled paper Mzuribeads!....”

Sanaa is one of the leading Ugandan designers working with Mzuribeads .

He also uses beads in his paintings, (and numerous large commissioned artworks for corporate and NGO buildings), not to mention the bags, belts, table mats, and so on. Bellow is a commissioned bead mural made for Golfing. It is truely magnificent.

To bead or not to bead is not a question for Sanaa, he wishes his workshop to become a bead haven.
We want to help Sanaa build his dream, and teach his creative skills and knowledge to the next generation of Ugandan artists. African, Handmade, Recycled Glass beads

THE FIRST GROUP TO MAKE UGANDAN RECYCLED GLASS BEADS.

The Papercraft workshop is just off Entebbe road about 10 km outside Kamapla. On first you are faced with quite a few dying racks for the handmade paper they craft to make notebooks, cards, and boxes. But, we went for their new feature; To see the large pile of broken glass get ready for the making of the first recycled glass beads produced in Uganda. We are Mzuribeads, producing Handmade recycled paper beads from the village of Ndejje, and in response to our customer requests, we spent the beginning of 2010 looking other handmade , recycled and fair trade, Ugandan beads.

Making the glass beads is a very delicate and difficult process. The process of heating and moulding makes the glass beads very fragile and they often break. The Papercraft group have only began to make the glass beads as one of their products and it will take some time before the glass bead making process is entirely perfected. There are also a certain number of colours of glass beads, red for example, they cannot produce because some of the dye colours are not yet available in Uganda. But already the recycled beads they produce are amazing, and we are sure it won't be long before everyone will want more of these splendid, resourceful beads.

How to Make Paper Beads

Want to know how to make beautiful, light weight, eco friendly, handmade, recycled beads! Check out these step by step instructions on making a paper bead, and you will enjoy and achieve some stunning results!

step 1: Selecting your recycled paper for your paper bead First select a colourful page from a used magazine or an old colourful poster..

step 2: Cutting the paper for the bead Measure and mark a perfect 3cm base triangle grid. Mark 3cm along at one end of the paper and 1.5cm directly opposite on the other end of the page. Then keep mark 3cm along creating a zig zags as you can see if you look closely to the page in the photo. Cut these triangular strips out.

step 3: Rolling the Paper Bead Start at the thickest end of the strip, start rolling it tightly around a needle or toothpick, (depending on how large you wish the hole to be). Put a dab of glue at the end and press down to hold the bead in place. (liquid paper glue works best).

step 4: Varnish, leave to dry and finish Thread all your beads on strings, and paint them all in varnish. Ensure that the string you use to thread them on is as wide as the hole, so as not to allow varnish to seep in and bock the holes. Leave to dry for 2-3 days, and your beads are ready to use!
